Das Deutsche Institut für Normung ist eine Normungsorganisation auf deutscher Ebene.Daneben gibt es auf europäischer Ebene das Europäische Komitee für Normung, CEN (Comité Européen de Normalisation) und auf internationaler Ebene die Internationale Organisation für Normung, ISO (für nichtelektrotechnische Normen) und die Internationale Elektrotechnische Kommission, IEC (für elektrotechnische Normen).
