Feldprogrammierbares Gate-Array
übersetzt "Feldprogrammierbare Logikschaltung": vorkonfektionierte integrierte Schaltung (IC) mit einer Vielzahl an Logikschaltungen, die vom Anwender selbst zu einer anwendungsspezifischen Schaltung programmiert wird. FPGAs sind je nach Ausführung und Hersteller ein- oder mehrmals programmierbar und dynamisch rekonfigurierbar. Bei der einmaligen Konfiguration wird die kundenspezifische Schaltung durch das gezielte Brennen von Schmelzbrücken erzeugt und kann danach nicht mehr verändert werden. Dagegen können Flashspeicher oder EPROMs, die auf der FPGA-Technologie basieren, einige tausend mal neu konfiguriert werden und behalten ihre Konfiguration auch ohne Spannungsversorgung.

Field Programmable Gate Array

FPGAs can be programmed once or several times and dynamically reconfigurable, depending on the design and manufacturer. In the case of a one-time configuration, the customer-specific circuit is created by the targeted burning of melting bridges and cannot be changed afterwards. In contrast, flash memories or EPROMs based on FPGA technology can be reconfigured several thousand times and retain their configuration even without power supply.
