Als Software bezeichnet man die Gesamtheit aller Mittel, die in Form von Programmen und Dokumentationen für den Betrieb von elektronischen Datenverarbeitungsanlagen, Großrechnern, Prozessrechnern, Minicomputern und Personal Computern sowie von Automatisierungs- und Steuerungseinrichtungen, Mess- und Überwachungsgeräten und Maschinenkomplexen auf Basis programmierbarer Rechnerbaugruppen zur Verfügung stehen. Dabei wird generell zwischen Systemsoftware, Standardsoftware und Anwendungssoftware unterschieden.

Software is defined as the totality of all means available in the form of programs and documentation for the operation of electronic data processing systems, mainframes, process computers, minicomputers and personal computers as well as automation and control equipment, measuring and monitoring devices and machine complexes based on programmable computer modules. A general distinction is made between system software, standard software and application software.
